Beth Jones’ daughter Sommer was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Diabetes four years ago.
Suddenly, the family’s medical bills were hundreds of dollars a month. “We had to decide each month whether to buy insulin or pay our electric bill, and it was difficult to make our mortgage payments,” says Mrs. Jones.
When All Kids coverage was announced, the Jones family, who live in St. Charles, immediately signed up for it. They were thrilled the State was giving them the support they needed to pay for Sommer’s medical bills. But the Joneses later found out that Sommer’s endocrinologist did not accept All Kids insurance. “We were devastated,” Beth said. Beth called for three weeks before finding an endocrinologist who would treat Sommer. “Thankfully, we found Dr. Kreiter at Children’s Memorial Hospital. She’s a great doctor, but we live in St. Charles, so it takes an hour and a half to drive to see her. We are grateful that All Kids is available to us, but we need the state to step up to the plate and pay doctors fairly so they will be there for kids like my daughter when we need them.”
